Fresh students of Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State have been urged to embrace the principle of delayed gratification. Professor Samuel Oyewole, Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University, gave the admonition while welcoming them. According to the don, it is beneficial in the long run to make some sacrifice now and reap the benefit later. It is better to have your gratification delayed than to have it now and suffer later,” he said. Professor Oyewole advised them to “spend less time on social gisting or browsing the net for exotic friends”. He also implored them to take their lectures seriously, be active participants in tutorial or practical classes, seek clarification when necessary and be team players.The professor of Botany said they should see their lecturers as their “partners |

in progress” who will always be ready to assist them “before examinations and not during examinations”. While urging the new students to familiarize themselves with the Student Handbook given to them so as not to run foul of the University’s rules and regulations,he warned that any infringement on examination rules and regulations would not be condoned but would be visited with stiff penalty, which may “cause any student to leave the University before his or her appointed time of graduation.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor assured the new students that they were indeed at “home away from home” as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, ‘Bode Ayorinde, lawyer and university teacher; the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Odebiyi, who was on a short vacation after a hectic 2010/2011 academic session; the Management and entire staff of the institution are in loco parentis to the students.
After emphasizing the University’s commitment to its vision to be the best University in Africa and one of the best in the world, he implored the new students to imbibe this, as “vision without action is merely a dream” while “vision with action can change the world”. Professor Oyewole said the University was determined to excel not only in academic but also in character and integrity in line with the University motto: “knowledge, integrity and leadership”. |
